...the Canadians, having decided to try to catch up on the hours that separate them from the Spaniards, and thanks to their excellent navigation, cut off a large distance by crossing a peninsula at the last part along the lake, gaining them a 45 minute advantage. Night fell, as the teams continued with their headlamps, jogging whenever they came to a short beach. At 22:30 the Spaniards decided to camp, while team 2-ALBERTA ADVENTURE RACING continued trekking, now through forest and through Patagonia peat bog, towards PC5 Seno Otway...

Meanwhile, the teams 10-FEED THE MACHINE/IBEX at 18:21hrs, and 3-MAD SCIENTISTS and 7-DAP ANTARTICA at 20:23 hrs, started trekking across Isla Riesco after having been transported PC3 Seno Obstrucción (they had been held back due to the bad weather conditions that had prevented them from paddling the kayak segment).

February 16
04:00 hrs, 10-FEED THE MACHINE is crossing the highest point of the mountain range in the first third of the trekking route across Riesco Island, on their way to Lake Riesco

From the extreme south of Lake Riesco, at 07:20 hrs 1-BUFF starts trekking again towards Seno Otway (Otway Sound). Ann Meidinger is still having problems with her left knee, after falling off her bike in the first section.

At 16:58 hrs 2-ALBERTA ADVENTURE RACING arrives at PC5 Seno Otway and have given us a few comments about the route so far:

Dan Wolfrom:
"After competing in PATAGONIA EXPEDITION RACE there is just no other race you can go in...
Katrina Rosen :
"We usually compete in 36 hour races. In this race, we have only done one trekking section in 36 hours!".

18:25 hrs, 10-FEED THE MACHINE is advancing from the southern part of Lake Riesco towards PC5 , the conditions here during the day have continued to be difficult because of continuous rain. Here are some of the health problems that the racers have been suffering from so far: Team 1-BUFF : Ann Meidinger has an injury to her left knee, and Juanjo Alonso has stomach problems due to "Food rations" (high-energy foods such as granola bars, chocolate, and other such things that they eat while on the move, in order not to have to stop - time is gold.)

Team 7-DAP ANTARTICA : All team members have problems with their joints and ligaments, due to overuse.

Team 2-ALBERTA ADVENTURE RACING : have blisters on their feet due to the long hours trekking.

20:48 hrs, team 1-BUFF arrives at PC5 Seno Otway .

23:22 hrs, team 3-MAD SCIENTISTS arrives at PC5 Seno Otway , following an alternative route, going around Lake Riesco on its east side - the original route was along its west side - and then following the Rio Grande river to arrive at the coast of Seno Otway.

The teams who have arrived at PC5 , although tired from the long trek, are continuing on in very good conditions to face the coming days of the race.

First thing tomorrow, we will re-evaluate the climatic conditions before granting permissions for the racers to start the next kayaking section towards Silva Palma Fiord.

February 17
03:43 hrs, team 7-DAP ANTARTICA arrives at PC5 .

05:45 The original kayaking section PC5 Seno Otway - PC6 Fiordo Silva Palma has had to be modified. Instead of the 50 km that were going to be undertaken, racers will paddle only 30 km in a more protected part of the section - from the coast ( PC5 ), passing along the east side of Engelfield and Vivian Islands, in the centre of Otway Sound, and when they reach the extreme south part of Vivian Island they will turn around and head back to Riesco Island. The change in route is due to the bad weather conditions, expecially in the middle of Otway Sound between Vivian Island and Silva Palma Fiord. This section is most exposed to the N-NW winds that are blowing at the moment. A boat from the Chilean Navy is in the area and is reporting winds of 20-25 knots with gusts up to 30 knots, whereas near the coast the winds are only reaching about 10 knots.

9:30 With the support of the Armada de Chile and the company Whalesound the kayaking section started, and it was much faster than had been expected because of the protection offered by the islands. Team 1-Buff from Spain set a strong pace, but towards the end of the section 2-Alberta Adventure Racing moved ahead of them, completing the section 3 hrs and 45 minutes. 1-Buff España arrived close behind, in 3 hrs and 48 minutes, and finally 3-Mad Scientist from South Africa came in with a time of 4 hrs and 10 minutos. 7-Dap Antartica had to quit when they arrived at Vivian Island because Natalia Armijo was not able to continue. they were transported out by the Chilean Navy patroller "Ona".

The team 10-FEED THE MACHINE has still not arrived at PC5 , but they are still so far within the cut-off time for the PC, and so are still in the race.
