Here we can experience a notable change in the landscape, going from the steppe to the first forests in Tierra del Fuego, principally Ñires, Coihues, Lengas and Canelos- native Chilean trees.
The racers are surrounded by gravel, earth and mud, some if it on the bikes or other times on them . producing the odd minor fall, giving bruises and cuts..nothing that doesn't allow them to continue.
Throughout this 71 km stage, it's common to find potholes and bridges in bad condition, all indicated of course in the " Route Book for the racers" given to them in its complete form together with the maps before the start of the race, allowing the teams to plan their strategy over the following days. |
On route to CP 4: Río Cóndor, throughout the night, some team experience problems to keep following the muddy tracks through the forests, made even more difficult by an error in distances in the route book. However the two leading teams arrive very quickly indeed, even before the lorry with their food bags and equipment.
Continuing on their bikes, the route towards CP5: Arturo is an old gravel forestry road in good condition. The Spanish team AXN Meridianoraid.com did not follow race instructions, they were the only team that put their trekking equipment in the mountain bike bag, consequently the wasted many hours waiting. On the other hand, New Zealand and Sweden were compensated for their waiting and were authorized to leave CP5.
