17:52 team 10-FEED-THE-MACHINE reached CP3 Seno Obstrucción.
19:30 2-ALBERTA-ADVENTURE-RACING and 1-BUFF began the Paso del Indio with the transportation of their kayaks and equipment through groves and over turf; in some parts lifting in others dragging their load over the wet ground. Also, in various sectors collaboration between the two teams conquering the obstacle could be observed.
The Paso del Indio: a portage route, thousands of years old, which allows access between the fiord of Obstruction Sound and the inland sea of Skyring Sound. To get across it, one must transport the kayaks, first across a trail, then paddle through the Lake Pedro, then along a second trail and paddle through Lago Muñoz Gamero, and then finally follow a third trail to arrive at the small fiord known as Fiordo Excelsior, which links up with Seno Skyring. |
20:45 hrs. 2-Alberta Adventure Racing and 1-BUFF put their kayaks into Lake Pedro and start the first paddling segment across Paso del Indio. Although the clouds above are moving at a great speed due to the high winds, down low this area is protected by the mountains that surround it, and the wind is not so strong here.
21:00 hrs, the teams 3- MAD SCIENTISTS and 7- DAP ANTARTICA still have not arrived at PC3 Seno Obstrucción , 12 hours after having started the trekking section.
22:00 hrs. 2-Alberta Adventure Racing and 1-BUFF start the second land portage, and in this area they spend the night. Wind gusts reach 25 knots. The Canadians put their tent up on the edge of Lake Muños Gamero and the Spaniards put theirs higher up, between the peat bog and the forest, just before where you descend to the lake.
23:46 hrs, the team 3- MAD SCIENTISTS arrives at PC3 Seno Obstrucción , reporting that team 7- DAP ANTARTICA is approximately 2 hours behind them.
06:30 hrs, at Skyring Sound, weather conditions at dawn are such that it is dangerous to paddle from Paso de Indios to Cabo Léon. Winds are between 15 and 20 knots, with large waves, conditions that are unusual so early in the day.
07:10 hrs, after having rested a bit, team 7-DAP ANTARTICA arrives at PC3 . The 3 teams, 10-FEED THE MACHINE/IBEX, 3-MAD SCIENTISTS and 7-DAP ANTARTICA have to wait to see what happens with the weather to define what their route will be.
07:40 hrs, teams 1-BUFF and 2-ALBERTA ADVENTURE RACING continue through the section "Paso del Indio", and at this moment are paddling through the Lake Muñoz Gamero.
8:40 hrs. 1-BUFF and 2-ALBERTA ADVENTURE RACING start the third and final portage over-land to get to the small fiord which will allow them to paddle out to Skyring Sound. This land-pass, although longer than the previous ones, has boards lain across which will help them to drag the kayaks across.
09:00 hrs, weather conditions continue to get worse. Wind gusts are reaching as much as 35 to 40 knots in Obstruction Sound. The PER organization has decided to transport the 3 teams, 10-FEED THE MACHINE/IBEX, 3-MAD SCIENTISTS and 7-DAP ANTARTICA, to Puerto Natales by catamaran, and from there transport them by land to PC4 Seno Skyring in Isla Riesco (Riesco Island). We thank for lodges and services offered to the organization in Puerto Natales.
09:40 hrs. 1-BUFF and 2-ALBERTA ADVENTURE RACING have made it through the Paso del Indio and are waiting there for instructions about whether to continue paddling towards PC4 Seno Skyring. The racers are very impressed by the landscape and by the land route which has allowed them to cross "from one sea to another", an unforgetable experience.
09:55 hrs, because of bad weather conditions, assistance has been requested from the patroller boat "Ona", from the , to transport the teams 1-BUFF and 2- ALBERTA ADVENTURE RACING from Paso de Indios to Cabo León (PC4). It is impossible to paddle this segment.
12:15 hrs. It is raining in the area of Seno Skyring, and the moments of calm here are periodically interrupted by strong gusts of wind. Taking advantage of a calm period, at 12:30 hrs. the two teams who have been leading this race start to paddle down the small fiord called Fiordo Excelsior and at 13:20 they make it to the patroller "Ona" which has been awaiting them to take them to PC4 Seno Skyring at Cabo León.
16:55 hrs, They start unloading the kayaks and the teams at Cabo León.
17:30 hrs, The catamaran , which was going to go to pick up the three teams who are still in Obstruction Sound (Seno Obstrucción) has had to stay in Puerto Natales. The port is closed due to the windstorm that has raised waves as high as 4 metres, leaving the PER race personnel as well as the three teams, 7-DAP ANTARTICA , 10-FEED THE MACHINE/IBEX and 3-MAD SCIENTISTS , in PC3 until tomorrow, in the hope that tomorrow the weather conditions will be better.
At 6:00 this morning the team 1-BUFF was authorized to start trekking, and 20 minutes later the team 2-ALBERTA ADVENTURE RACING was also authorized to depart. However, the Spanish team did not leave (remember that they already have several hours' advantage over the Canadians). At 6:25 , the team 2-ALBERTA ADVENTURE RACING departed from PC4 Seno Skyring to start the 63 km trek across Isla Riesco ( Riesco Island ). The Spaniards left an hour later, but they caught up with the Canadians, amongst clouds and snow flurries, in the first mountain range that they have to cross to make it across the island. From here, we are waiting for them in the valley that leads to Riesco Lake . The Spaniards are taking a longer but easier route through peat bog, while the Canadians are following the river.
At 17:30 hrs, the Spanish team 1-BUFF arrived at the northern shore of the lake, starting a few minutes later to follow its margin around towards the south, along small beaches and wading through water up to waist-deep, since the alternative of travelling through the forest around the lake is very slow. A few minutes later the Canadians appeared, going at a faster pace. Ann, from the team 1-BUFF, was starting to have pain in her knee, slowing the pace of their hiking, so the Canadians caught up with them and overtook them. But this small advantage didn't last long, since the Spaniards found a more open section of forest and managed to get ahead of them and arrive first at the beach.
