PER2006 Winter teams update     Other editions 2004 [+]

Teams follow the river, flowing through eddies, strong currents, even porting kayaks to avoid big waterfalls, after three hours and a half for the first team, 1-Lider / Al Aire Libre, and one extra hour for the last team, we reached Seno de Ultima Experanza, right on the foot hills of impressive Mount Balmaceda, from there they will stay on the eastern bank paddling to Hostería Balmaceda, were racers, press and the organization set up camp with a front row view of the Balmaceda Glacier.

One of the favorite teams for this kayak section was 3-TUTRAVESIA INDOMITA, although they made it only 10 minutes behind the leaders. These young racers have achieved many mentions in this discipline, as guides and German Doggenweiler has done a one man kayak voyage all the way to the far and mythical Cape Horns. It is clear that big differences exist between an expedition race in controlled conditions of a few days (or hours) and a long voyage that demands major planning and self-sufficient logistics.

We must mention that the organization has had major difficulty due to the low water level in the Serrano River this time of year, The low temperatures do not allow the defrosting that feeds this river. The hard task of getting the assisting dinghies through the shallow waters have been immensely time consuming and have beached many times. Also in the area of the Serrano Falls boats have been ported along just like the kayaks.

At 0830 hrs, under the imposing Mt. Balmaceda, another day of grueling competition begins. All teams begin their paddle towards Estancia Perales, surprise surprise….since the beginning of the paddle, the leaders of the pack 1- LIDER / AL AIRE LIBRE had been shadowed by 6- GNC, but the latter with a big doses of inner strength and adrenaline pass the leaders, switching positions… later on 6-GNC makes a move to eliminate their shadow team by breaking (stop paddling) and then accelerating, leaving behind the other team by a few precious seconds, enough to take first place in this third stage of the 1st WINTER PATAGONIA EXPEDITION RACE.

During the afternoon the racers are transported to Puerto Natales on a boat owned by Turismo 21 de Mayo, for the second time they have taken part of this race supporting with great energy the development of PATAGONIA EXPEDITION RACE. Then they continue by land to Tierra del Fuego to the Vicuña area, a trip of over 650 Kms. In Tierra del Fuego the next three stages of the event will take place.
