… being interrupted by small and not too deep gullies, some smaller waterways and others, that grow a lot bigger in the rainy season and thaw. In this sense, Río Azocar for example is a natural hindrance to care about. At its shallowest places the water is only 8° C warm and its outlet is really deep. This is why we recommend to the racers to cross this river as soon as possible! But this advice is not always heard, since the wide peat’s are just too enticing compared to the more wooded parts of the zone, ending approximately at the middle of this trekking section.
From there on, the peat bog rules over the deep and dense forests, making it easier to continue. The trekking ends in another simple and fast coastal path, getting to Skyring Sound right where PC2 Río Nutria is located.
At 17:33 o’clock TSL Outdoors La Clusaz arrived at PC2 Río Nutria. This team keeps demonstrating that they are the favourites to win the race since they led over the other racers in each section.
The route continues with a 104 km mountain bike track along a beautiful coastal road surrounding Seno Skyring. In the middle of this section the teams will need to jump on a ferry to cross over to RiescoIsland where the road goes on. With only one drawback: the last passage will depart at 7 pm.
We have been informed from the first zone (Trekking) that the three teams – still busy on their first section – are getting closer to PC2 Río Nutria. Keeping in mind that the teams 4- 7° Grado Monterrey México and 11- Camelos on the rocks have almost no experience in long hikes over peat bog... it is very exhausting, being wet all the time, and it is really necessary to concentrate on where to step next, not to sink in.
From the I. Municipalidad de Río Verde, where the ferry crosses to the stunning Isla Riesco, we received news that team 1- TSL Outdoors La Clusaz did not make it to cross and will have to spend the night there together with photographers and organization members.
At 8:30 in the morning, the team 1- TSL Outdoors La Clusaz crossed to Isla Riesco, continuing with their mountain bikes exploring the island, all the way down the most southern zone towards the end of the world.
12:00 o’clock: 4- 7° Grado Monterrey México arrived at PC2 Río Nutria. Totally impressed by the peat bog – they moved on after resting for one hour in the changing zone.
At 2:43 pm team 1- TSL Outdoors La Clusaz already arrived at PC3 Cabo León, in less than an hour, they started again with their backpacks on the next trekking tour to PC4 Sutivan, which is located in the region of Rio Boer.
11- Camelos on the Rocks arrived at PC2 Río Nutria at 2:52 pm. They were also so fascinated by the peat bog, what is not an unusual experience of new teams meeting Patagonia. After having eaten something, they had a short rest, prepared their equipment and left after only one hour – quickly riding on their bicycles towards PC3 Cabo León.
From Río Verde we’ve been informed that the teams 4- 7° Grado Monterrey México (6:00 pm) and 11- Camelos on the Rocks (8:00 pm) have made it to catch the last ferry crossing that day to Isla Riesco.
The Chilean Team arrived just a bit before 9:00 pm at PC2 Río Nutria. One of their members, Luis Castañeda, had serious problems with his stomach.
From the mountainous countryside, standing at the highest point of the trekking route, we have been informed by the team 1- TSL Outdoors - La Clusaz – thanks to – that they will spend the night there, waiting for daylight to continue through the dense forest zones.
Today in the morning, Luis Castañeda, from team 7- DAP- Armada de Chile was transported to the regional hospital in Punta Arenas to check on his state of health, which would not improve over night. The medical examination came to an emetic syndrome and dehydration, most probably resulting from the physical exhaustion and not from an infection.

The trekking route from PC3 Cabo León to PC4 Sutivan leads through Isla Riesco from the north to the south, passing through really splendid and varied sceneries with majestic sights of the nearby mountain range. The trekking starts leading along the coast, continuing further south, reaching a dense forest with slopes in the form of waves, interrupted by small rivers, brooks and small gullies filled with tree trunks. The woods are so dense that it is sometimes necessary to slow down in order to free the way from the branches with your own hands. Moreover there exist zones with plentiful calafate – typical Chilean bushes of sweet berries with thorns – which will leave their marks on the athletes!
