For centuries, the extreme isolation of the southernmost region
of America has been a favorable characteristic for the preservation
of the flora and fauna. However, in the past decades, this isolation
has turned against it as it has permitted the devastation of extense
areas of these southern forests without anyone being able to react
in time.
The great trees that grow in this territory of hostile winds are
able to survive because they form part of the forest. Without
the forest, the great tree will fall.
One of our main motivations in developing the PATAGONIA
EXPEDITION RACE has been to make people aware of the need
to protect our environment. We want to show the world that there
exists, in this isolated corner of the planet, a virgin territory
of great scenic beauty and with a great diversity of native species
that must be protected.
